Standaard Sudoku-regels zijn van toepassing: vul elke rij, kolom en 3×3 blok met de cijfers 1–9, elk precies één keer.
German Whispers (ook bekend als Whisper Sudoku) tekent groene lijnen op het rooster. Elke twee cijfers die aangrenzend zijn op de lijn moeten minstens 5 verschillen. Omdat het minimale verschil 5 is en cijfers variëren van 1–9, creëert dit een sterk afwisselend hoog-laag patroon: als een cel laag is (1–4), moet de volgende hoog zijn (6–9) en vice versa. De lijnbeperking elimineert 5 als geldig cijfer in de meeste posities.
